Description: Understanding tens and ones using money.

Goals: NY State Core Curriculum
Key Idea 2 - Number and Numeration:
2B: Use concrete materials to model numbers.
2C: Relate counting to grouping and place value.

Key Idea 4 - Modeling/Multiple Representation:
4B: Construct charts and graphs to display and analyze data.
4C: Use multiple representations as tools to explain the operation of everyday procedures.

Objectives: Students will be able to use pictures to represent 2-digit numbers.

Materials:

Procedure:
Day 1:
1. Read 17 Kings and 42 Elephants .
2. Discuss the story elements.
3. Find a rhythm in the story.
4. Discuss the rhyme scheme.

Day 2:
1. Review the story.
2. Return to the story to represent the number of animals in some of the pictures, using money stamps on a chart (review with ten rods and ones cubes). The chart should represent a place value mat.
3. Use different colors for the stamp pads to differentiate between dimes and pennies. Students stamp the coins to represent the number of animals.
4. The class counts to confirm.

Assessment: As a student is stamping the coins, the rest of the students can use the coin manipulatives. The teacher can then walk around to check for understanding.
